Birdwatching Basics
Learn the basic tools to begin a life-long enjoyment of birds! Enjoy a short talk about the basics of birdwatching, including basic bird biology, identification tips, binoculars, field guides, and local birds. Explore hands-on displays where you can test out binoculars and spotting scopes, look through bird guides, learn about birding resources like eBird, and discover local birding hotspots. Migration will be just beginning so let’s see what we can find. We will investigate the backroads of Northern Broome County looking for any late winter migrants or early spring arrivals. We’ll visit local hotspots, making stops at Dorchester Park and Upper Lisle. Meet to car pool at 8:00 am at Lowe’s Parking Lot on Upper Front Street. Look for us in the small lot near Front Street. Volunteer drivers may be necessary. Please consider volunteering if you are able.

Pollination is a critical ecosystem service, and one that is mostly provided by flower visiting animals. After checking the edge of the lake, Colleen Wolpert will lead a moderate hike to a lesser known part of the park where a pond hosts a variety of dragonflies and damselflies to be photographed for identification later. Meet at Greenwood Park at 11am. Please protect yourself from sun and ticks and have water with you for this walk.

We will alternate driving and walking along the dead-end level dirt road looking for butterflies. There will be a temptation to walk in tall grass, so long pants tucked into socks is recommended. Binoculars and cameras are also recommended for both butterflies and birds. Be prepared to be asked about eye color of fritillaries in this area.
