* February Member's MeetingFebruary Member's Meeting

Time: 7:00 am

JOIN US - Wednesday, February 25 - 7:00PM via ZOOM Only HOMEGROWN NATIONAL PARK - Enhancing Nature in Your Yard Learn about the Homegrown National Park (HNP) movement, which encourages citizens to take actions at home to counter the widespread declines in birds, insects and other wildlife in recent decades. HNP was co-founded by entomology professor and ecologist Dr. Doug Tallamy, author of several books that promote the use of ‘keystone’ native plants and other actions to enhance habitat in our own neighborhoods. Jim Green is an avid HNP participant who will discuss both the threats and opportunities as well as the important connections between insects, plants and almost all songbirds. Jim will emphasize the need for ‘soft landing’ sites in your yard and will highlight several plants native to our area. Jim Green - A high school field biology course initiated former meteorologist Jim Green’s lifelong interest in the natural world. After becoming a homeowner years later, he enthusiastically began studying the value of native plants even before reading Dr. Doug Tallamy’s groundbreaking “Bringing Nature Home” book published in 2007. Over time, Jim has significantly shrunk his lawn by adding a variety of native shrubs, vines, trees and perennials to his modest-sized city yard with the goal of attracting birds and other wildlife. These actions match the goals of the Homegrown National Park (HNP) movement that began in 2020. Jim is a member of the Pennsylvania Native Plant Society and Lycoming Audubon Society. Since 2008, he has authored ‘Gardening for Birds’ articles for the Lycoming Audubon Society newsletter. He resides in Williamsport, PA. * Winter Waterfowl Field TripWinter Waterfowl Field Trip

Time: 9:00 am

Join us as we search for waterfowl in the waterways around Broome County! For this trip, we will visit whatever locations are “hottest” for ducks leading up to the trip. It should be a good day to see a variety of waterfowl. The final meeting location and itinerary will be emailed to registered participants based on recent waterfowl sightings and scouting of locations. Possible locations will include Boland Pond, Hillcrest Pits, Otsiningo Park, Kmart Plaza, and possibly Whitney Point Reservoir and Upper Lisle. We will go where the ducks are! Participants can choose to carpool if they are comfortable doing so or you may drive yourself to the various locations. You must be a current Naturalists’ Club member to attend this field trip. Group size will be limited to 15 attendees. Registration is required. Questions – Contact Victor Lamoureux at vlamoureux9@gmail.com or 607-239-9215.
